Van Cortlandt Park – 7/14/2019

Van Cortlandt NYMS walk
NYMS Walk, Van Cortlandt Park, 7.14.19
A beautiful day in Van Cortlandt Park. By a marvelous twist of fate we met up with another group of mushroom hunters led by Olga Tzogas (of Smugtown Mushrooms in Rochester)! We also had the good fortune to run into Christian Liriano and Alex Byrne of the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance. Not a lot of mycorrhizal activity: no Amanitas, only a couple of Lactarii, Inocybes, Russulas, and Boletes. . . 80 species collected, including a new myxomycete for NYC.

Prospect Park Pop-up Walk 6/23/20189

Woods between the Audubon Boathouse and the back of the Zoo, 4 hr walk, ~30 people at start, many welcome newcomers. Pleasant sunny day, after a full week of rain, some drenching. >70 species. We found three species new for NYC: Josh Millrod and Maryna Lansky found the stunning myxomycete Lycogala conicum (cousin of the common Lycogala epidendrum); the stinking “truffle” Densocarpa shanorii was found in great abundance in the woods west of the zoo (thanks to Sigrid Jakob’s detective work in figuring this out!); Ethan Crenson collected and identified Scutellinia erinaceus, a smallish member of the genus, with a yellow – orange/yellow color and very long lashes.
