Wolfe’s Pond Park, Staten Island – 7/8/2017

6 hr walk, ~15 people attending. Hot day with intense shower the day before and some rain previous week. Most exciting finds: 1) THREE Hygorcybes! These are rare for NYC and finding three on one walk is unprecedented. 2) Amanita parcivolvata (False Fly Agaric). This is common in the Southeastern US and is occasionally found as far North as the NE coastal plain of NJ. This is the first time we have seen this beautiful mushroom in NYC. 3)Thanks to Sebastian, Elaphocordyceps attached to TWO false truffles (Elaphomyces sp.). AND 4) thanks to Kay and Don, Xylobolus subpileatus found by our club only once before in a Park in Queens but recorded by E. A. Burt as occurring on Staten Island in the early 20th century but not found since. Over 140 species at last count! – quite a few new to the city!
