Please join us this Sunday for the club's inaugural walk at Manitou Point Preserve! Make sure to bring plenty of water and a lunch. Wear sturdy hiking clothes and boots.

For the people taking the train from Manhattan, the 8:50 Hudson line train from Grand Central gets to Manitou at 10:04 AM. Aubrey Carter, the walk leader, will meet everyone at the station and we’ll walk a quarter mile to the preserve. We’ll probably be walking/hiking for several hours but trains back to Manhattan leave every hour from Manitou starting at 1:29 PM.

If you plan on driving let Aubrey (aubcarte@gmail.com, 203-252-9421) know because there are only ~3 parking spots at the lower entrance to the preserve. If we have more people driving we’ll park you at the main preserve entrance and we'll shuttle people to the lower entrance.

Please join us for our Stony Brook walk this Sunday August 20! Stony Brook is located within Harriman State Park, NY.

Make sure to bring plenty of water, sun and bug protection, and a lunch. This walk, unlike our city park walks, is over uneven and rugged terrain. Make sure to wear suitable shoes/boots and bring a walking stick if you feel shaky or unstable on trails. This walk is away from public transportation, so if you plan on leaving before the walk ends, make sure you have arranged your own transport.

Please join us for our Beech Brook walk this Saturday, August 26. Beech Brook is located within Harriman State Park, NY.

Make sure to wear suitable shoes/boots and bring a walking stick if you feel shaky or unstable on trails. This walk is away from public transportation, so if you plan on leaving before the walk ends, make sure you have arranged your own transport.

This walk will be a bit different from our usual NYC Park walks. The Greenbrook Sanctuary prohibits the removal of material from their property. This optimizes the survey baseline: the environs are not foraged thus providing a more natural venue for surveying the fungal biome.

However, NYMS in cooperation with the Palisades Nature Association (Greenbrook Sanctuary) has conducted many surveys of the Sanctuary with their permission to pick fungi.

We will require that all collections be made according to a protocol that will ensure documentation: in situ photos, carefully excavated specimens, voucher slip and field notes included in the specimen bag.

All participants will return their collections to the Nature Center where all collections will be accessioned, photographed and documented for the survey. These collections will be dried and a portion of them will be submitted for DNA analysis.
