F.A.Q’s about using spent grow blocks

I have green mold/orange growing on my block. What do I do now? Can it be saved or should I recycle it?
If only part of the block is affected by mold, you can try cutting off this section. Otherwise, if the mold touches the mushrooms, you will need to compost the block.
My pins are drying out. What should I do?
Increase the frequency and intensity of your misting! You can really drench the pins, especially in the summer.
My blue oysters are turning brown. Is that normal?
If the mushrooms are brown, cracking and drying out, you should intensify your misting. Otherwise, our blue oysters can range in color from blue to grey to brown, so it’s okay!
My block is feeling really light even though I have been misting it several times a day? I feel like it’s too dry to grow anything. What should I do to increase moisture content?
You can try throwing the block in the fridge for a few days to cool it off. As mentioned above, drench your cut sites!
How do I help my pins survive during really hot weather?
Keep your block in the fridge for a few days after receiving it. If you have access to fans, these can help cool off your block and increase air flow.
My Lions Mane is turning brown/orange/pink. Is that normal?
Some discoloration is normal, and can be an indication of lack of moisture. Intensify your misting! Your mushrooms will remain discolored, but will still be edible.
How long should I cold shock it, should or do I need to cold shock it?
Do you mean cold shock with water (like rehydrating the block)? 1-2 hours is fine.
What is the ideal weight of the block, so I know if I need to add more water?
  • Lions Mane wt?
  • Blue Oyster wt?
  • Royal Trumpets wt?
  • Pink Oyster wt?
  • Yellow Oyster wt?
  • [OTHER] wt?

NA

Do I need more FAE (Fresh Air Exchange), if so where are some symptoms to look out for with:
  • Lions Mane
  • Blue Oyster
  • Royal Trumpets
  • Pink Oyster
  • Yellow Oyster
  • [OTHER]

If the oysters get really stringy looking, this is a sign to increase oxygen and fresh air.

What does it mean, when the mushroom stipe/pins are really long? (Blue Oyster)
See above
What is the ideal temperature range for:
  • Lions Mane
  • Blue Oyster
  • Royal Trumpets
  • Pink Oyster
  • Yellow Oyster
  • [OTHER]

Room temperature! 68-72 degrees F.

Do I need to cold shock the grow block?
No
Do I need to tape up the slits and cut a new one?
You can! Make sure you only have 2 slits at once, but you can totally reuse the old ones.
Can I cut a slit on the top of the bag or should it only be on the side?
  • Lions Mane
  • Blue Oyster
  • Royal Trumpets
  • Pink Oyster
  • Yellow Oyster
  • [OTHER]

2 sides total!

Can I grow these outdoors?
Yes, but not recommended in the summer time due to heat and pests.
Where should I keep the grow block?
Some place with fresh air, indirect light, room temp. We do not suggest basements or closets, many folks keep them on their kitchen counter.
I’ve heard these mushrooms can be misidentified, is that a dangea>
All of our mushrooms are edible 🙂
I have fungus gnats, what do I do?
Unfortunately, there is not much you can do.

How do I dispose of my spent block?
Throw away the plastic and compost the block. Or throw it in your garden!
Should I remove the plastic from the block?
When you are finished growing, yes.
How much light to the grow blocks need, indirect, direct fluorescent, etc..?
Indirect sunlight is best!
