The annual Gary’s Backyard mushroom walk is our first official walk of the season and honors Gary Lincoff. Gary not only wrote the definitive guide to North American mushrooms but spread the joy of mushrooms far and wide. He was for many years the club’s guiding spirit, and Central Park was his beloved local park. Find out more about Gary here.
Central Park has seen very little rain over the last couple of weeks so fungi are likely to be relatively scarce. We’re sure to see tiny ascomycetes aka ‘dots on sticks’, crusts, polypores and perhaps a few gilled fungi.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here’s what to expect.
This is not a foraging walk. The park’s rangers are known to enforce the ‘no picking’ rule that applies to all New York City parks. No baskets please.
Bring water and lunch. Mosquitoes and ticks are out, so make sure to protect yourself. Long pants and firm footwear are recommended.
Many members document their finds using the iNaturalist app – we highly recommend doing so.
It is always advisable to check the MTA Service Advisory web page.
The walk leader will be Vicky Tartter (646 250 6004).
I hope to see you on Sunday
